List of requirements


Step 1

  1. Recite the Pesukim Shema and V’shenantam from the “12 Pesukim” and explain its connection to Tefillin.
  2. Do the following:
    1. Find a source in the Chumash for Tefillin;
    2. Explain the reason for putting on Tefillin.
  3. Explain who is obligated to put on Tefillin and when they should be put on.
  4. Do the following:
    1. Explain the two signs that make an animal kosher;
    2. Describe what Tefillin is made from;
    3. Name the 4 Parshios that are in the Tefillin.
  5. Show a place in the prayers which mentions the mitzvah of Tefillin.
  6. Tell or write a story about the importance of checking Tefillin.
  7. Explain the connection between Tefillin and the coming of Moshiach.
  8. Do the following:
    1. Explain how someone your age could take part in Mivtza Tefillin;
    2. OR show proof that you have done that Mivtza.


Step Two

  1. List 3 things that cannot be done out of respect to Tefillin.
  2. Show the places in the prayers where we touch our Tefillin and demonstrate how it is done.
  3. Explain on what hand the Tefillin is placed and why.
  4. Describe the qualities a Sofer must have in order to write.
  5. Demonstrate the proper procedure of putting on Tefillin on the head and arm.
  6. Demonstrate how to respectfully handle and put away Tefillin.


Step Three

  1. Explain why we do not wear Tefillin on Shabbos and Yom tov.
  2. Explain what must be done if one talks while putting on the hand Tefillin.
  3. Recite the thoughts one should have when putting on Tefillin.
  4. Describe two differences between the Rashi and Rabeinu Tam Tefillin.
  5. Demonstrate the following;
    1. tying the knot on the hand Tefillin;
    2. tying the knot on the head Tefillin.
  6. Show two differences between the Arizal and Beis Yosef styles of writing.
  7. Tell two halachos which are related to k'sidram (requirement of being written in order).
