List of requirements


Step 1

  1. Do the following:
    1. Recite the posuk Shema Yisroel from the “12 Pesukim”.
    2. Tell when this posuk is recited in the prayers and what thoughts we must have when reciting it.
    3. Explain the meaning of the word Tefilah.
  2. Recite the Modeh Ani prayer, and explain its meaning. Tell when it is recited.
  3. Do the following:
    1. Describe four (4) things done in preparation for prayer.
    2. Do at least TWO of those things daily for a week.
  4. Name the daily prayers and when they are said.
  5. Demonstrate the following:
    1. the procedure for washing hands before prayer;
    2. the actions involved in reciting Shema;
    3. the actions involved in the Shemonah Esrei (standing prayer).


Step Two

  1. Explain the connection between Tefilah and the coming of Moshiach.
  2. Recite the blessing Asher yotzar and tell when it is recited.
  3. Describe three (3) places in which one must not pray or say a blessing.
  4. About Interruptions during Prayer explain the following:
    1. Three (3) places where you may not talk;
    2. Where you may not even hand motion to a friend;
    3. Where you may not answer amen;
  5. Point out the following Sections of the Shachris Prayer in the Siddur:
    1. Birchos Hashachar
    2. Korbonos
    3. Psukei Dizimrah
    4. Birchos Krias Shema
    5. Krias Shema
    6. Shemona Esrai
    7. Tachnun
    8. Shir Shel Yom
    9. Tehillim.
  6. Name the parts of the Shemoneh Esrei (standing prayer).
  7. Do the following:
    1. Tell which direction we face during Shemona Esrai and why;
    2. Demonstrate how to face the correct direction during Shemona Esrai.
  8. Describe three places where you may not stand during Shemona Esrai.
  9. Do the following:
    1. Demonstrate how to do the Tachanun prayer;
    2. Name four (4) days on which Tachanun is not said.
  10. Explain the main accomplishment of Prayer in our times.


Step Three

  1. Name the additions to the prayers made on the following days:
    1. Shabbos;
    2. Rosh Chodesh;
    3. Yom Tov;
    4. Rosh Hashana;
    5. Yom Kippur;
    6. Chanukah;
    7. Ta'anis tzibur (public fast day).
  2. For three (3) of the days listed above, show in the Siddur the correct order of prayers for that day.
  3. Name the four types of Kadeshim and show in the Siddur when they are said and by whom.
  4. Explain the following:
    1. Three (3) sections in the prayers where one may not talk;
    2. When one may not motion with the hands;
    3. During which sections one may not answer amen.
    4. During which sections one is required to stand up.
  5. Show proficiency in using the “Prayer Interruption Chart”.
  6. Act as a Chazzan during prayers.
  7. Explain why we wear a yarlmulka during Prayer.
  8. Write a letter to Hashem. Remember to include:
    1. A request for your loved-ones as well yourself;
    2. a resolution or promise to increase in Torah and Mitzvos;
    3. you may want your Counselor/Instructor to send it to the Kosel (Western Wall).
