First Aid Mitzvah Badge

 


List of requirements


Step 1

  1. Explain the following:
    1. the source in Torah which gives us the permission and obligation to heal others;
    2. the reason for which one must care for their health.
  2. Recite the proper name for a hospital in Hebrew and the reason for that specific name.
  3. Demonstrate the proper treatment and describe improper treatments for the following:
    1. minor cut, scrapes, and bruises;
    2. splinters;
    3. common burns and scalds;
    4. bee stings;
    5. mosquito bites;
    6. nose bleed;
    7. blisters;
    8. sprains.
  4. Explain under what conditions a patient should or should not be moved.
  5. Demonstrate the following lifts:
    1. fireman's lift;
    2. two other single-person carries;
    3. making a stretcher out of commonly found materials;
    4. carrying someone on a stretcher.
  6. Explain or recite the following (for places without Hatzolah, substitute EMS):
    1. the phone number to Hatzolah in your area;
    2. the information which must be given to Hatzolah when calling;
    3. what you should do to help Hatzolah reach the patient;
    4. what you should do once Hatzolah has arrived on-scene.
  7. Explain the importance of bikur cholim (visiting the sick) for both the visitor and the one visited.


Step Two

  1. Explain the role of medical healing once Moshiach comes.
  2. Show one place in the Torah where a prayer was made for healing, and explain the situation and people involved.
  3. Demonstrate the proper treatment and describe improper treatments for the following:
    1. major bleeding;
    2. tick bites;
    3. poison ingestion;
    4. broken arm and leg;
    5. fainting;
    6. electrical shock;
    7. choking;
    8. neck injury.
  4. Recite the following:
    1. a minimum of ten (10) items that should be in a first-aid kit;
    2. three locations which should have a first-aid kit.
  5. Explain or recite the following:
    1. the brocha (blessing) made when taking medicine;
    2. in which cases medicine may be taken on Shabbos.


Step Three

  1. Summarize six (6) things which Rambam recommends for good health.
  2. Name the four situations in which someone must recite birchas hagomel (blessing of thanksgiving).
  3. Explain when the mi shebeirach prayer for the sick is recited, and the difference in the prayer during the week and on Shabbos.
  4. Demonstrate the proper treatment and describe improper treatments for the following:
    1. allergic reaction;
    2. asthma attack;
    3. dehydration;
    4. drowning;
    5. object in the eye;
    6. car accident.
  5. Demonstrate two different two-person carries.
    Choose five injuries listed in this Skill Badge (any step), and explain how one can reasonably prevent their occurance.
  6. Explain under which circumstances one must do melachah (“work”) on Shabbos for the sake of healing.
