List of requirements


Step 1

  1. Recite the Posuk 'V'heenei Hashem' from the 12 Pesukim and explain its
    meaning in regards to Elul.
  2. Explain two reasons why we blow Shofar on Rosh Hashanah.
  3. Show a place in the prayers which mentions Shofar.
  4. Tell the Baal Shem Tov's story about the "Prince who was lost" and explain
    what it teaches us about Shofar.
  5. Explain the connection between Shofar and the coming of Moshiach
  6. Say the proper way to greet someone on:
    1. Elul;
    2. Rosh Hashanah;
    3. Aseres Yemai Teshuva;
    4. After N'eelah on Yom Kipur.
  7. Explain the reason for doing Tashlich on Rosh Hashana and what is done
    there.
  8. Name at least two animals that can be used to make a Shofar and two that can not be used.
  9. Explain the following:
    1. eating a fish head on Rosh Hashana;
    2. dipping an apple in honey;
    3. eating a pomegranate.


Step Two

  1. Describe the three calls blown on the Shofar.
  2. Do the following:
    1. Recite the Brochah that is said when blowing the Shofar;
    2. Explain who is obligated to hear the Shofar;
  3. Tell the story that Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Barditchov told about the "King's Rescuer" and explain what it teaches us about Shofar.
  4. Describe what happened on the first Rosh Hashanah in history.
  5. Explain why we do not blow a Shofar on Shabbos.
  6. Explain two reasons why we blow Shofar during Elul.
  7. Explain why a Shofar is curved.
  8. Explain why the Jews in Yemen prefer to blow the large Kudu Shofar instead of a smaller ram's horn.


Step Three

  1. Explain why Rosh Hashanah is on the Sixth day of creation instead of the First.
  2. Sound the following Tekiahs (Shofar calls):
    1. Tekiah
    2. Shevarim
    3. Teruah
    4. Tekiah Gedolah
  3. Tell the story about the Baal Shem Tov's student and the "Right Key".
  4. Describe two things that can disqualify a Kosher Shofar for use.
  5. Explain why Rosh Hashana is 2 days even in Eretz Yisrael.
  6. Make your own Shofar from the proper animal's horn.
