List of requirements


Step 1

  1. Recite by heart the posuk Bereishis bara from the “12 Pesukim” and explain its connection to Shabbos.
  2. Explain the following:
    1. the sources in the Chumash for Shabbos;
    2. The reason for keeping Shabbos.
  3. Explain the connection between Shabbos and Moshiach.
  4. Find a place in the prayers where it mentions the Mitzvah of Shabbos.
  5. Name three (3) things we should do on Erev Shabbos to prepare for Shabbos.
  6. Demonstrate how Shabbos candles are lit. Explain who lights first, mother or daughter, and why.
  7. Demonstrate how Kiddush is made on Friday night.
  8. Name five (5) activities that we may not do on Shabbos.
  9. Explain the reason for the following:
    1. using two Challos for each Shabbos meal;
    2. eating Cholent on Shabbos.


Step Two

  1. Sing Sholom Aleichem and explain its meaning.
  2. Explain when one should make Kiddush on Friday night and when Kiddush should not be made.
  3. Explain how Kiddush can be made if no wine is available.
  4. Name the additional prayer added on Shabbos and explain why we say it.
  5. Demonstrate how tea is made on Shabbos.
  6. Explain the following:
    1. The source of the 39 Melachos;
    2. How the Melachos can be divided into categories.
  7. Demonstrate how Havdallah is made.
  8. Participate in a Shabbaton.


Step Three

  1. Name ALL 39 Melachos.
  2. Name three types of Muktzah.
  3. Recite by heart “Retzeh V'hachlitzenu” (in Birchas Hamazon).
  4. Demonstrate how to bring keys home on Shabbos.
  5. Sing two parts from “I’m Big Gedalia Goomber”.
  6. Explain how the following should be eaten on Shabbos:
    1. fish with bones;
    2. nuts;
    3. watermelon.
  7. Describe how hot food should be taken off a Blech and served.
